The Indian smartphone market is growing rapidly, with over 100 crore users relying on Android and iOS operating systems. However, the data privacy concerns of multinational tech firms have sparked interest in a home-grown operating system that prioritizes safety and privacy. To address these concerns, IIT Madras-incubated startup JandKops has developed BharOS (also known as BharatOS), an ( what is AOSP )AOSP-based mobile operating system that aims to take on Android and iOS.

What is BharOS?

How was BharOS Developed?

BharOS was developed by JandK Operations Private Limited, a non-profit organization incubated at IIT Madras. The aim was to create a home-grown operating system that addresses the concerns of Indian citizens over the collection and use of their data by multinational tech firms.

How is BharOS Different from Android?

Technically, BharOS is very similar to Android as they share the same basics. However, what sets BharOS apart is its absence of Google services and apps. Google has been known to collect user data through its pre-installed apps and services, often without explicit consent. BharOS, on the other hand, does not come with any pre-installed services or apps and is deemed to be more secure(Most Secure Operating System In the World)as a result.

How to Install BharOS?

As of now, there is no information on how users can install BharOS. It is likely that the operating system will be limited to new devices and not be launched for older devices due to the risks involved in removing and installing a new operating system. BharOS is also expected to be released for organizations that handle sensitive information and require confidential communication. The OS is not expected to be released to the masses anytime soon.

How will Apps Work on BharOS?

BharOS will not have the multitude of default apps that Android has, instead, users will be able to choose the apps they want to use on their devices. BharOS will have its own app store, eliminating the need for the Google App Store. There is also the possibility that users will be able to sideload apps from other sources.
